Few things can wake you up like a tall glass of cold water. Yet, nearly half of people worldwide struggle with dehydration, often without knowing it. Many do not realise how dangerous this can be to their health.

When you do not drink enough water, your blood becomes thicker, making it harder for veins and arteries to function well. This increases the risk of blood clots, high blood pressure, heart attacks, and strokes. Dehydration can also make the space between body cells acidic, which may lead to gout, a painful joint condition. Excess acid in the body can also cause kidney stones and raise cholesterol levels.

Dry throat is one of the first signs of dehydration. Many people try to solve this with lip balm, but that does not address the real issue. Dry skin is another clear signal. The skin is the largest organ in the body, and when it lacks water, dryness becomes noticeable very quickly.

Dry or irritated eyes can also point to dehydration. When the body lacks water, tear ducts dry up, making the eyes red, itchy, or bloodshot. Over time, this can affect vision, especially as a person grows older.

Joint pain can also be linked to low water intake. Cartilage, which protects joints and prevents bones from rubbing against each other, depends heavily on water. Drinking enough water helps keep joints, bones, and muscles healthy.

Frequent illness may be another sign. Water helps the body flush out toxins, mainly through the kidneys. Without enough water, toxins build up, weakening the immune system and leading to repeated sickness.

Constant tiredness is also common. When the body lacks water, it pulls fluid from the blood to keep functioning. This reduces the blood’s ability to carry oxygen, making you feel weak, tired, and sleepy.

Sometimes, dehydration feels like hunger. The body can confuse thirst with hunger, causing unnecessary eating. This only adds more work for the body instead of solving the real problem.

Digestive issues can also arise. Water keeps the mucus lining of the intestines healthy. When this lining dries out, problems like heartburn and poor digestion can occur.

Dehydration can speed up ageing as well. As people grow older, the body’s ability to absorb and store water reduces. If you do not drink enough water, your body adjusts as if it is ageing faster, which can affect your appearance.

Finally, constant thirst itself is a warning sign. You should not wait until you are thirsty before drinking water. Your body should always have enough water so it does not need to send emergency signals.
