3 ways to identify a fake bank call from a scammer

Fake bank call scams have been around for a long time, and recent studies show that many Ghanaians, especially the elderly and less educated, have fallen victim to them. Scammers use fear and urgency to trick people into giving out sensitive banking information.

Here are three ways to spot a fake bank call:

1. They claim your account is at risk and ask for sensitive information

Scammers often warn that your account is about to be frozen, hacked, or compromised. They may ask for details like:

ATM card numbers

Bank Verification Number (BVN)

One-Time Passwords (OTP)

Transaction codes

These calls usually have a panicked or urgent tone, pressuring you to share personal information. Real banks never ask for such details over the phone.

2. They are persistent and desperate

Fake callers often call repeatedly, insisting that you provide your information immediately. This urgent, pushy behavior is a major red flag. Legitimate bank employees do not pressure clients this way.

3. They discourage you from contacting your bank

Scammers may tell you not to call your bank’s customer service or visit a branch. They may claim it’s stressful or that you don’t have enough time. Never follow this advice—if someone discourages you from contacting your bank, it’s likely a scam.
