Bawumia in trouble for hugging Fante Comedy

Controversial social media activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor has taken a swipe at former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia over his public show of support for TikTok star Prince Ofori, popularly known as Fante Comedy.

Fante Comedy was arrested for allegedly making death threats against President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama in the wake of the August 6 helicopter crash that claimed eight lives. He was picked up on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, together with the North Tongu Constituency Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yayra Abiwu.

After five days in custody, the comedian was released on bail on Monday, August 18, 2025. Soon after, a video emerged showing him in a warm embrace with Dr Bawumia, who appeared to welcome him like a hero.

This development did not sit well with Barker-Vormawor. In a Facebook post, he argued that the gesture looked like an endorsement of Fante Comedy’s alleged threats.

“I have seen videos of Fante Comedy, one of the Tiktokers arrested for saying they will behead the First Lady and kill the President. He was in a warm embrace with the former Vice President Bawumia, receiving a hero’s welcome. Mr Comedy has also now given media interviews saying that just one call from the former Vice President saw to it that his jail was changed to a better one. I have been thinking deeply about what these incidents mean, I have come up short. So I will leave it to right-thinking members of our community to comment on,” Barker-Vormawor wrote.

He added, “I know this though. In some countries, the second claim will lead to serious questions being asked of the police establishment. But I hear that in Ghana, the Opposition is actually in Government. Same way, in some countries, that warm embrace will be damaging to a presidential hopeful’s image. But in Ghana, the other presidential hopeful in the same party is linked to the killing of a journalist. He is still a front runner. Anyway, I thank God for granting me the serenity to accept the things I do not understand.”
