Akwatia by-election: One suspect arrested over early morning chaos

Police in Akwatia have arrested a man for allegedly removing the posters of one of the candidates at a polling station during today’s by-election.

The timely intervention by security personnel ensured that voting proceeded without disruption. Authorities have since reiterated warnings that any attempt to interfere with the electoral process, including intimidation or violence, will be met with firm action.

The by-election was triggered by the passing of Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, creating the need for a new representative.

More than 50,000 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots in the keenly contested race between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Solomon Kwame Asumadu.

Both candidates have mounted vigorous campaigns in recent weeks, supported by senior party officials and national executives who have visited the constituency.

To secure the exercise, the Ghana Police Service has deployed over 5,500 officers across Akwatia, while the Electoral Commission (EC) has assured voters of a transparent and credible election.
