Sophia Akuffo in hot water over alleged GH¢7,000 Cantonment land purchase (VIDEO)

Senior Communicator for the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, has taken a swipe at former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo, questioning her integrity following her defense of dismissed Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV on September 4, 2025, Owusu criticised Sophia Akuffo’s comments about the process that led to Torkornoo’s removal, describing her remarks as baseless and hypocritical.

“If the former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo wants me to take her seriously and see her as an honest person, she must return the land she bought for GH¢7,000 at Cantonments,” Owusu said.

He accused Sophia Akuffo of showing selective solidarity, claiming her defense of the ousted Chief Justice was motivated by personal ties rather than principle.

“She knows the embattled Chief Justice in three ways: both are women, they attended Wesley Girls’ High School, and both have held the position of Chief Justice. That is why she did what she did,” he alleged.

Owusu also called on state security agencies to investigate Sophia Akuffo’s tenure as Chief Justice, raising concerns about some of her past administrative decisions, including the reassignment of judicial staff and alleged mishandling of internal disputes.

Sophia Akuffo, who also serves on the Council of State, had earlier expressed her disapproval of the process that led to Torkornoo’s removal.

In an interview with TV3, she described the proceedings as “an ordeal no judge should endure,” adding that it was handled as though it were a “treason trial.”

“I pray to God that no Chief Justice, no judge should go through this rigmarole again,” she said.

Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was officially removed from office following a recommendation by a five-member committee chaired by Justice Gabriel Pwamang.

A statement announcing the decision cited Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, which outlines procedures for removing superior court judges.

“President John Dramani Mahama has, in accordance with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution, removed the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, from office with immediate effect,” the statement said.

Before her removal, Torkornoo had been suspended in April 2025 after President Mahama, in consultation with the Council of State, determined there was a prima facie case against her based on three separate petitions.

The Pwamang Committee later concluded there were sufficient grounds of stated misbehavior to warrant her removal…CONTINUE MORE READING>>>
