MultiChoice rebuffs Sam George over agreed price reduction claim

The MultiChoice Group has refuted claims by the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, that it has agreed to reduce subscription prices for its services in Ghana, stating that no such agreement has been reached.

In a statement released on Friday, September 5 — just hours after the Minister held a press conference on the issue — MultiChoice clarified that while it remains open to dialogue, discussions are still ongoing and no decision has been made to lower DStv prices.

“We will fully participate in the established Working Committee. However, we wish to clarify that MultiChoice Group has not agreed to a price reduction,” the statement read.

Earlier in the day, Samuel Nartey George told journalists that MultiChoice had shown willingness to cooperate with government through a consultative process similar to the one used with mobile network operators.

“MultiChoice has requested a 30-day window for the committee to arrive at what percentage of reduction will be achieved. So let’s be clear, they have finally accepted that there will be a reduction.

“Now they want us to discuss the level of reduction. I believe, as Minister, that we do not need 30 days. Fourteen days is enough for us to reach this decision, inclusive of weekends,” he stated.

He also announced the formation of a stakeholder committee to oversee the process, comprising representatives from the Ministry, the National Communications Authority (NCA), MultiChoice Ghana, and MultiChoice Africa.
