Popular actress dead

Hollywood is mourning the loss of veteran actress Diane Ladd, a three-time Academy Award nominee whose remarkable performances made her one of the most respected figures in film and television. She passed away at the age of 89.

Her death was confirmed on Monday by her daughter, Laura Dern, who released a heartfelt statement announcing that her mother died peacefully at her home in Ojai, California, with her by her side.

In her tribute, Laura Dern described her late mother as her “amazing hero” and a “profound gift of a mother,” expressing deep gratitude for the love, wisdom, and inspiration she shared throughout her life.

“She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist and empathetic spirit that only dreams could have seemingly created,” Dern wrote. “We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”

Diane Ladd’s career spanned over six decades, marked by her versatility, humour, and emotional depth on screen. She began as a stage and television actress before gaining widespread recognition for her unforgettable performance as the tough but charming waitress Flo in Martin Scorsese’s 1974 classic, “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.” The role earned her her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

She went on to star in an impressive range of films, including “Chinatown” (1974), “Wild at Heart” (1990), and “Rambling Rose” (1991)—the latter two earning her additional Oscar nominations. Her performance in “Wild at Heart”, directed by David Lynch, showcased her boldness and intensity, while her role in “Rambling Rose” was particularly special as she starred alongside her real-life daughter, Laura Dern, marking one of the few times in history that a mother and daughter were both nominated for Oscars in the same year.

Beyond the big screen, Ladd also made her mark on television with roles in series such as “Alice,” “Enlightened,” and “Kingdom Hospital.” She was known for her dedication to her craft, her southern warmth, and her deep empathy for the characters she portrayed.

Her legacy extends far beyond acting — she was also an author, director, and producer, and a passionate advocate for the arts.

Fans and colleagues across the entertainment industry have taken to social media to celebrate her life and contributions, describing her as a trailblazer, mentor, and an “actress of rare grace and fire.”
