President Mahama opens up on signing anti-LGBTQ bill

President John Dramani Mahama says he will sign the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, popularly known as the anti-LGBTQ bill, if Parliament approves it.

Speaking during a courtesy call by leaders of the Christian Council of Ghana in Accra on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, he reaffirmed his commitment to what he described as Ghana’s long-standing family and moral values.

“We agree with the Speaker to relay the bill and let Parliament debate it. If Parliament, representing the people of Ghana, endorses it, votes on it, and passes it, and it comes to me as President, I will sign it,” he said.

He added that gender is determined at birth and that the family remains the foundation of the nation.

“A person’s gender is determined at birth, and the family is the foundation of our nation. That is our position. There are no questions about what we believe,” President Mahama stated.

He also supported the Speaker’s call for the bill to be re-laid and debated again to allow for any needed amendments or clarifications.

The anti-LGBTQ bill, first introduced in 2021, seeks to criminalize same-sex activity and the promotion of LGBTQ rights in Ghana. It has strong support from religious and traditional leaders but has faced criticism from human rights groups who argue that it could violate fundamental freedoms.
