Mahama will not save any party official no matter how high caught in galamsey – Mahama Ayariga

The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has reiterated that any government official found engaging in illegal mining will be arrested, showing the government’s commitment to tackling the environmental crisis.

His statement follows a call by the Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, for weekly briefings from the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources on the rising destruction of forest reserves and water bodies.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga stressed that President John Dramani Mahama is committed to the fight against illegal mining and will allow the law to deal with any appointee found culpable.

He said: “Unlike in the past when certain regional chairmen were openly involved in galamsey and even when a minister wrote a report, nothing was done. Today, any government official caught aiding or abetting galamsey will be arrested. Any party official, no matter how high you are—national or regional—if you are caught, the president will not interfere. He will allow the law to take its course.”

Meanwhile, Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh highlighted the worsening destruction of forest reserves and water bodies and insisted that the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources must provide weekly updates.
