8-year-old girl dies in Dansoman Market fire

An overnight fire at the Dansoman Market has claimed the life of an 8-year-old girl and destroyed several wooden structures and shops, according to an official update from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

The fire, which began shortly after midnight, was first reported at 00:02 hrs. A crew from the Dansoman Fire Station arrived two minutes later and found the flames rapidly spreading across multiple parts of the market.

Sensing the severity of the situation, the team quickly called for reinforcement. Eight additional fire engines were deployed from Industrial Area, Ministries, National Headquarters, Madina, Weija, Anyaa and Accra City fire stations. Two water tankers from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly also supported the operation.

Firefighters attacked the blaze from different angles to prevent it from sweeping through the entire market. According to the GNFS, the fire was confined at 01:51 hrs and brought under control by 03:03 hrs, after which overhauling began to deal with lingering hotspots.

Amid the operation, tragedy occurred when an 8-year-old girl, trapped inside one of the affected shops, could not be rescued. She was pronounced dead, and her remains were handed over to the Police for further investigations.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. The GNFS says investigations are underway.
