Private legal practitioner Obiri Boahen has described the recent coup in Guinea-Bissau as a positive step against authoritarian rule.

According to him, most coups in Africa occur because of authoritarian leadership, corruption, abuse of power, lack of transparency and the refusal of some leaders to hand over power when their terms end.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Boahen said many African leaders are so obsessed with power that they manipulate elections, constitutions and systems to stay in office longer.
He noted that “those who make peaceful change impossible make violent change inevitable,” stressing that African leaders must be accountable, transparent and inspire confidence.
Boahen warned that more African countries may experience coups if their leaders fail to govern responsibly and step down peacefully.
He predicted that Nigeria and Tanzania could be at risk, saying, “There will be more coups in Africa… Tanzania will experience a coup. Nigeria should tread cautiously because they are likely to get a coup.”
He accused Nigerian President Bola Tinubu of wanting to hold on to power, adding that any attempt to rig elections could trigger unrest.
Boahen also criticised ECOWAS, claiming it has lost its relevance. He added that Cameroon, Uganda and Benin could all face coups, especially where leaders have altered term limits.
He insisted that anyone suggesting coups are gone for good “is mentally unstable and needs assessment.”…CONTINUE MORE READING>>>
