The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, refused an interview request on Tuesday, saying the journalist who approached him did not follow parliamentary protocol.

After chaos broke out in the chamber on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, TV3’s Christian Yalley went to Ahiafor—who was standing with some Majority MPs and police officers—to seek clarification on what had happened.

But Ahiafor, who is also the MP for Akatsi South, rebuked him, saying, “You know the procedure. As a speaker, to speak, you know the procedure to follow. I am not the type that you can put a microphone in my mouth and say, ‘Honourable, Honourable.’ No. Stop this.”

Earlier, Parliament had descended into chaos after Minority MPs left their seats and moved to the centre of the chamber in protest.

The confusion began during heated exchanges over the declaration of the Kpandai parliamentary seat as vacant—a decision the Minority insists is unlawful and not in line with procedure.

Before the confrontation, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga criticised what he called the Minority’s “continuous and orchestrated protest,” adding that he was not surprised they were trying to disrupt parliamentary work.

The Bawku Central MP accused the Minority of derailing business over the Kpandai issue, saying they had resorted to noise-making and unruly conduct to stop the Speaker from giving rulings.

But Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh fired back, warning that government business would “continue to suffer” until the matter was resolved.

Not long after his comments, tensions heightened.

Even as the Speaker attempted to continue with proceedings, Minority MPs intensified their protest. They rose from their seats, moved to the centre of the chamber, and chanted in opposition.
