What Tinubu told Anthony Joshua after fatal accident

President Bola Tinubu has personally reached out by phone to former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua and his mother following a fatal road accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s associates and left him injured.

According to a press release from the State House, signed by the President’s special adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu conveyed his condolences to Joshua and offered prayers for his recovery.

“I spoke with AJ on the phone to personally convey my condolences over the death of his two associates. I wished him well and prayed for him. He assured me that he is receiving the best care in the hospital,” the President said. He also contacted Joshua’s mother to express sympathy, and she reportedly appreciated the gesture.

President Tinubu further spoke with Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was at the hospital with Joshua, and received assurances that the boxer was being given the best possible care. The phone call followed an earlier public message from the President, who is currently abroad, expressing sympathy for Joshua and his family after the accident. In that statement, he praised Joshua for his courage, discipline, and love for his country, calling him a source of national pride and praying for strength, wisdom, and a speedy recovery.

The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed that the crash occurred near the Sinoma area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, close to Sagamu. The accident involved a Lexus jeep carrying Joshua and a stationary commercial truck. Five adult males were involved in the crash, with two fatalities, one injury, and two others, including Joshua, sustaining minor injuries. FRSC operatives conducted rescue operations, traffic control, and victim evacuation. Preliminary investigations indicate that excessive speed and wrongful overtaking were likely contributing factors.
