Race for NDC next flagbearer tightens, no clear frontrunner – Latest poll

The race to succeed President John Dramani Mahama within the ruling National Democratic Congress is shaping up as a closely contested three-way contest, with no candidate enjoying a clear lead, according to the latest National Tracking Poll by Global InfoAnalytics conducted from December 1 to December 21, 2025.

The poll shows Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu holding a slim lead with 26 per cent, down from 29 per cent in October 2025. He is followed closely by Finance Minister Dr Ato Forson with 23 per cent, up from 18 per cent, while NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia records 22 per cent, slightly down from 24 per cent. Other aspirants trail behind, with Vice President Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang polling 11 per cent, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah 7 per cent, and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa 6 per cent. Professor Joshua Alabi and Eric Opoku each recorded 2 per cent.

The survey also tested scenarios where some contenders are excluded from the race. In a contest without Prof Opoku-Agyemang, Haruna Iddrisu, Julius Debrah and Okudzeto Ablakwa, Dr Ato Forson emerges as the leading candidate with 48 per cent, followed by Asiedu Nketia with 41 per cent. Professor Joshua Alabi and Eric Opoku trail with 6 per cent and 5 per cent respectively.

The poll further examined potential head to head matchups against likely New Patriotic Party candidates for the 2028 elections. If Dr Mahamudu Bawumia becomes the NPP flagbearer, he is projected to lose to leading NDC contenders, polling 40 per cent against Haruna Iddrisu’s 56 per cent, 38 per cent against Dr Ato Forson’s 58 per cent, 43 per cent against Asiedu Nketia’s 53 per cent, and 46 per cent against Julius Debrah’s 50 per cent.

In scenarios where Kennedy Agyapong secures the NPP nomination, the NDC retains a strong advantage. Haruna Iddrisu leads with 61 per cent against 34 per cent, Dr Forson with 62 per cent against 34 per cent, Asiedu Nketia with 57 per cent against 38 per cent, and Julius Debrah with 53 per cent against 41 per cent. Analysts attribute Kennedy Agyapong’s weaker showing to a sharp decline in NPP support across the five northern regions.

The findings point to a fluid succession contest within the NDC, suggesting that the party’s eventual choice of flagbearer will have significant implications for both internal party dynamics and the 2028 to 2029 electoral outlook…CONTINUE MORE READING>>>
