AUDIO: NPP opens up on contesting Ayawaso East by-election

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Justin Frimpong Kodua, has said the party will take part in the upcoming Ayawaso East by election and is confident of winning.

“I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t go for the election,” he said during an interview on Adom FM’s morning programme, Dwaso Nsem.

His comments follow a suggestion by the Municipal Chief Executive for the area, Abdul Ganiyu Ibrahim, that the NPP should stay out of the by election as a sign of respect to the National Democratic Congress.

Mr Kodua said the statement reflects what he described as the “hypocrisy of the NDC.”

“It is rather unfortunate to hear such statements,” he added. “Why shouldn’t we go for elections? Your MP has passed away, and you are telling us not to contest? I am very surprised by that.”

The Ayawaso East seat became vacant after the death of its Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama, on Sunday, January 4, 2026, following a short illness. Mr Mahama, who served four terms, was elected on the ticket of the NDC.

Mr Kodua referred to past events, saying, “When our MP, Ernest Kumi, passed away, the NDC came to contest the election in Akwatia. So, what has changed now? This is not about whether we will win or not. We are going to the elections, and they should not assume otherwise.”

He said the NPP has begun searching for a candidate and will fully participate in the Ayawaso East by election.
