US-based Ghanaians celebrate the arrest of Ofori-Atta

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has disclosed that many Ghanaians living in the United States are relieved and even happy following the arrest of former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, January 10, 2026, Manasseh said sentiments among Ghanaians in the US show deep anger over how Ofori-Atta handled Ghana’s economy. According to him, many believe the former minister should be deported to Ghana to face justice.

“Ghanaians here in the US are very livid about Ken Ofori-Atta and how he managed the economy,” Manasseh said.

He recounted an encounter with a Ghanaian student who expressed strong resentment toward the former finance minister.

“I met a student who said, and I quote, ‘I hate Ken Ofori-Atta with passion.’ The student explained that after completing school and National Service, he invested his money, but the haircut and other economic policies badly affected him,” Manasseh narrated.

He said the reaction he witnessed was not isolated. Based on his travels across the United States, Manasseh noted that dissatisfaction with Ofori-Atta’s stewardship is widespread among Ghanaians abroad.

“I have travelled quite a bit since I got here. I think I’ve been to at least 20 states, and whenever I meet Ghanaians, they are not happy about the stewardship of Ken Ofori-Atta,” he said.

According to Manasseh, the arrest of the former finance minister has therefore been met with jubilation in some Ghanaian communities in the US.

“I think many are jubilating and happy that he’s been arrested and hope that he will be taken back to Ghana to face justice,” he added.
