Here is why the IGP captured wearing FBI Badge during an event in Accra
On January 8, 2026, Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohunu drew public attention after a video surfaced showing him dancing with senior officers at the Ghana Police Service’s end-of-year celebration, WASSA 2025, held at the Police Headquarters.

While the moment was widely shared online, a section of social media users became more interested in an unfamiliar badge spotted on the IGP’s right arm. The insignia closely resembled the emblem of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) New York Field Office, sparking curiosity and debate.
The appearance of the badge led to questions about why the head of Ghana’s police service would be wearing an emblem commonly associated with a foreign law enforcement agency, and whether the insignia was genuine.
Subsequent checks by GhanaWeb confirmed that IGP Yohunu has no service record with the FBI and has not been publicly linked to any formal training or employment with the US agency. Available information shows that his entire professional career has been within the Ghana Police Service.
Further investigations, however, revealed that in October 2025, IGP Yohunu led a senior delegation from the Ghana Police Service to the FBI’s New York Field Office. The visit marked the first official interaction between the leadership of the Ghana Police Service and senior executives of the FBI.

The engagement formed part of efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation between the two institutions, particularly in areas such as cyber-enabled fraud, intelligence-led policing and counterterrorism. During the visit, the Ghanaian delegation was hosted by Assistant Director-in-Charge Christopher Raia and his team, who held discussions on improving collaboration and information-sharing between the two agencies.
Sources familiar with the visit explained that the badge seen on the IGP’s uniform is not an official FBI operational credential. Rather, it is a commemorative pin presented to him during the October 2025 engagement with the FBI New York Field Office. The insignia is said to represent professional partnership and mutual cooperation between the two law enforcement bodies, not employment or authority within the FBI.

The FBI is known to have a long-standing tradition of honouring law enforcement officers through symbolic recognitions. Under its Honorary Medals Programme, the Bureau has for decades presented medals and honorary badges to acknowledge acts of bravery, merit or collaboration. These honours, which include the FBI Star, Medal for Meritorious Achievement, Shield of Bravery and Medal of Valor, have also been awarded to foreign officers who contribute to shared law enforcement objectives…CONTINUE MORE READING>>>
