Another separate investigations on Ken Ofori-Atta kick starts

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has confirmed that investigations outside the SML case into the activities of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta are currently underway.

He explained that the separate probe involves both Ghanaian authorities and foreign investigators who are examining offshore transactions connected to the former minister.

Speaking on JoyNews on January 10, 2026, Dr Ayine said the investigations are still in their preliminary stages and no conclusions have been reached yet.

“… I started investigating Ofori-Atta. In fact, in this case, I’m doing it with some foreign investigators who are tracking all the offshore dealings and so on. And then we are also doing our own investigations here. They are inconclusive, as we speak,” he said.

The Attorney General stressed that the ongoing inquiry is distinct from other well-known cases linked to Ofori-Atta.

While declining to disclose details, Dr Ayine described the nature of the investigation as potentially far-reaching.

“It’s different, totally different [from the SML investigations] and potentially mind-blowing, but I will not give any details at this point in time,” he added.

Meanwhile, in the SML case involving Ofori-Atta and other individuals, the Office of the Special Prosecutor, led by Kissi Agyebeng, has provided background on the origins of SML. He described the arrangement as a scheme that allegedly used “public office for private benefit,” with the former finance minister said to have played a central role.

In November 2025, the OSP stated that investigations into the SML contract revealed that the company was originally registered as Strategic Mobilisation Enhancement Limited (SMEL). It was incorporated on February 14, 2017, about three weeks after Ofori-Atta’s appointment as finance minister and shortly after the New Patriotic Party won the 2016 general election.

The Special Prosecutor said the company was founded by Evans Adusei and was later submitted to the Public Procurement Authority for a sole-source contract as “a service provider for enhanced classification, valuation, and risk management platform in the customs set-up.”
