I don’t believe that anybody wants to remove Afenyo-Markin for now – Okyere Baafi
The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, has rejected claims that there is an internal plot by some MPs to remove Alexander Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader in Parliament.

According to him, there have been no discussions or signs of such an agenda within the Minority caucus. He stressed that the caucus remains united and focused on its work, with no intention by any group or individual to undermine or replace the Effutu MP.
Speaking in an interview on Wontumi TV on January 14, 2026, Okyere Baafi said he is not aware of anyone scheming to take over Afenyo-Markin’s position.
“I don’t believe that anybody wants to remove Afenyo-Markin for now, even though no position in Parliament is permanent,” he said.
“The party can decide at any time for someone else to take up the position, but as things stand now, I am not aware of anyone scheming or aiming for his seat. We don’t have any animosity among us.”
He further dismissed claims of internal division, describing them as unfounded.
“For now, I don’t foresee anything like that happening,” he added, emphasising that the caucus remains focused on its collective responsibilities.
His comments come on the back of claims by NPP flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong, who has said he advised the Minority Leader to step down. According to Agyapong, there are individuals within the party who are actively seeking Afenyo-Markin’s position.
He said he has personally called on the Minority Leader to relinquish the role and allow those challenging him to take over, arguing that Afenyo-Markin is financially stable and does not need to hold on to the position.
“He is well to do, so he should leave the position for those who are fighting him,” Agyapong said.
Speaking on UTV on December 15, 2025, Agyapong claimed that criticisms of Afenyo-Markin’s leadership style are largely driven by internal power struggles within the party.
“Those criticising Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s leadership want positions, some people are arguing that the Minority Leader should come from the Eastern Region or the Ashanti Region. I have told him to leave the position for them and I have personally called him to tell him to step down from the position.”
He added that he deliberately chose not to mention the names of those pushing for the position.
“If it was in the olden days, I would have mention all those seeking his position’s names but now I won’t. He can eat for the rest of his life and it shouldn’t look like being an MP is the only way to survive,” Agyapong stated.
Meanwhile, Afenyo-Markin has faced criticism from various quarters over his leadership style, including from Solomon Owusu, a Senior Communicator for the Movement for Change.
“If the NPP has a weak leader like Afenyo-Markin, then it is no surprise the party keeps collapsing,” Owusu remarked…CONTINUE MORE READING>>>
