New candidate up for NPP Chairmanship position
Former Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah-Boateng, popularly known as Asabee, has revealed his intention to once again contest the national chairmanship position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Asamoah-Boateng said he feels the time is right to help re-energize and reorganize the party ahead of future elections. According to him, the role of the national chairman is crucial and must be taken seriously by anyone aspiring to lead the NPP.
“The chairman must bring a different ballgame. He must be able to motivate and energize so he can carry people along. I have studied, listened to, and understood the ideologies and philosophies of the party,” he said.
While he hasn’t officially launched his campaign, Asabee hinted that he is laying the groundwork. He emphasized the need for a new chapter in the NPP—one that focuses on discipline, structure, and stronger internal organization. He admitted to sending out subtle messages in recent weeks to signal his readiness for a new era of leadership.
Asabee expressed confidence that he has what it takes to lead the NPP to victory in the 2028 general elections but noted that he intends to approach the race cautiously.
This will not be his first attempt at the chairmanship. In 2022, he was one of the key contenders in the NPP’s internal elections. At the time, he touted his strength and experience as crucial qualities that made him best suited to face the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
However, the results did not go in his favor. Stephen Ayesu Ntim, who was contesting the position for the fifth time, won the chairmanship slot with 4,014 votes. Asabee came a distant second with 1,010 votes.
Despite that setback, the former Director-General of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA) appears undeterred. His renewed interest signals a potential comeback to frontline party leadership as discussions around the NPP’s future direction continue to gain momentum.
