I was paid GHC 2,700 monthly salary as National Security Officer at KIA – Hopeson Adorye
Hopeson Adorye, a former key figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has shared personal experiences from his time as a national security officer at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), offering clarity on what many assumed to be a well-paying government position.

Appointed to the role during President Akufo-Addo’s administration in 2017, Adorye revealed that contrary to public perception, his salary was modest. He stated that he earned GH¢2,700 per month, amounting to only GH¢38,000 annually.
“My first, second, third pay and the rest were GH¢2,700, yet you people keep spewing nonsense,” he remarked, expressing frustration over assumptions that the job came with significant financial benefits.
Adorye recounted the moment he received his appointment letter from the national security coordinator and saw the salary figures. Disappointed, he sought a meeting with President Akufo-Addo to express his concerns.
During their discussion, he requested to be seconded as a national security officer from the Jubilee House, with the hope that it would come with better compensation. However, he noted that his request did not yield any tangible result.
His account sheds light on the realities behind what are often perceived as prestigious government roles and highlights the disparity between public expectations and actual working conditions within Ghana’s national security structure.
Adorye has since been removed from his position, but his story offers rare insight into the inner workings and challenges of serving in such roles.
