At the hospital I pulled his leg and said, ‘You said we have a meeting and you have come to lie here – Fmr DCE on Ernest Kumi death

The leadership of Ghana’s Parliament, led by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, on Tuesday, July 9, 2025, paid a visit to the family of the late Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi, to commiserate with them.

The atmosphere at the late MP’s residence was filled with deep sorrow, as family members and fellow MPs struggled to come to terms with the tragic loss.

Photos and videos from the visit captured the emotional moments, with several people seen in tears. The pain was especially visible when the former District Chief Executive (DCE) of Akwatia and brother of the late MP, Seth Birikorang Ofosu, began recounting the events leading to Ernest Kumi’s sudden death.

According to Birikorang Ofosu, he had spent the entire weekend with the late legislator. After several engagements outside Accra, they returned to the city on the evening of Sunday, July 6, 2025, and had planned a meeting for 2:00 p.m. the next day.

He said on Monday morning, Kumi’s wife, Mavis, called him with the urgent message that his brother needed him and was at the hospital.

“When I got to the hospital, his wife and mother were sitting beside the bed he was lying on. The doctor was also there. I pulled his leg and said, ‘You said we have a meeting at 2:00 p.m., and you have come to lie here,’” he recounted.

He said it was at that moment he was informed that Ernest Kumi—whom he had just been with—had passed away.

The parliamentary delegation included Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, Deputy Majority Leader George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei, the Chief Whips of both sides, clerks of Parliament, and several other MPs.
