Where did you learn your English? – Trump subtly mocks Liberian President?

During a high-level diplomatic meeting with Liberian President Joseph Boakai, U.S. President Donald Trump couldn’t hide his admiration for the Liberian leader’s fluency in English.

The meeting, which was primarily meant to focus on improving U.S.–Africa trade and strengthening security ties, briefly shifted in tone when Trump, clearly impressed, paused the discussion to compliment President Boakai.

“We thank you, such good English. That is beautiful. Where did you learn to speak so beautifully? You were educated where?” Trump asked, speaking in front of a gathering of U.S. and African officials.

In a video from the meeting that has since gone viral, President Boakai remained calm and simply responded, “In Liberia.”

Trump, looking surprised, replied, “That’s interesting, beautiful language. I have people at this table who cannot speak nearly as you.”

The remark drew light laughter from some of those present at the meeting.

Liberia shares a long and unique history with the United States. The country was founded in 1822 through the efforts of the American Colonization Society, which aimed to resettle freed African Americans in Africa. Its capital, Monrovia, was named in honour of U.S. President James Monroe. Although formal recognition by the U.S. came later, the two countries developed close diplomatic and strategic ties, especially during the Cold War.
