You think Ablekuma North is a theatre for dancing – NPP candidate slammed

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has expressed strong optimism about his party’s chances of winning the upcoming parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North Constituency, while criticising the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie.

His comments follow the Electoral Commission’s decision to rerun parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations in the constituency, citing irregularities during the December 7, 2024, general election.

Gbande did not hold back in his assessment of the NPP candidate’s campaign, suggesting she lacked the seriousness and leadership required to represent the constituency.

“The NPP candidate [Nana Akua Afriyie] has not demonstrated a lot of competence in her campaign. They believe that Ablekuma North is a theatre for dancing, which is how to pull a crowd. Let’s go and dance and share money for people to vote for them.”

He also raised concerns about her past, alleging that her record while serving as an ambassador had damaged her public image.

“She’s a character who is under public scrutiny because of her role when she was an Ambassador, her activities there, including some allegations of having been involved in visa issues and extortion,” he alleged.

“This record can’t take a person to Parliament. The NPP has used a cruel manner of ways to impose her, but the system has rejected that imposition,” he added.

The NDC has confirmed its readiness to contest the rerun, while the NPP has declared it will not participate, maintaining that its candidate won the election and that the EC’s decision goes against a previous court directive.
