I bought food for us to eat together – Nephew of murdered immigration officer breaks down

Lucky Dan Mensah, the nephew of 38-year-old Steffen King Amoah, also known as Nana Kofi, an immigration officer who was reported missing on July 4, 2025, has opened up about the final hours leading to his uncle’s mysterious disappearance and tragic death.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb, monitored by DailyNewsGhana, Lucky narrated a detailed account of what happened on Thursday, July 3, just before his uncle went missing. He said that he and his uncle were at home when Steffen received a phone call from a friend identified as Highest Bright.

“I had received a call from someone in Haatso to come and collect something. On my way back, I called my uncle to check if he was home. He said yes, so I bought food for us to eat together. After we finished eating, he went to the washroom. Before leaving, he asked me to monitor his phone because he was expecting a call from Highest Bright. The call did come through, and I informed him. He returned to answer it,” Lucky recounted.

He explained that after the phone call, his uncle got dressed and informed him that he was stepping out briefly to collect something from the person who had called. That was around 8 PM.

“It was not unusual for him to go out and not return that same day, so I didn’t think anything of it. He just said he was going and would be back soon. I thought it was one of his usual short errands,” he said.

But things took a strange turn the following day. Steffen’s wife called Lucky, clearly distressed and asking if her husband was at home. Lucky informed her that Steffen had left the previous night and had not returned.

“She said he sent her a text around 8 PM saying he was at home. But I told her that couldn’t be true because I was at home the whole time, and he hadn’t come back. In fact, he didn’t even take his house keys when he left,” Lucky said.

This discrepancy in the message Steffen allegedly sent his wife and what Lucky witnessed led the family to raise an alarm and report the matter to the police.

“I asked her to send me the message he sent so I could check the time. When she forwarded it, I checked, and I was convinced he hadn’t come home. That’s when we knew something was wrong,” he explained.

The family then proceeded to report the incident to the police. Based on Lucky’s information, the police tracked down and arrested the man known as Highest Bright, the last person Steffen was known to have had contact with.

After the arrest, Lucky said the suspect was taken to the police station, but he refused to give a statement until his lawyers arrived.

“He kept quiet and wouldn’t say anything to the police. He was hoping to be granted bail that day, but the police denied his request. He is currently in custody and expected to appear in court on July 23, 2025,” Lucky added.

The sudden disappearance and death of Steffen King Amoah have left his family and community in shock. As the investigation continues, Ghanaians are waiting for justice and clarity on what really happened to the immigration officer, who, according to family and friends, lived a peaceful and responsible life.
