We were expecting you to apologise to Ghanaians – Afadjato MP slams NPP

Member of Parliament for Afadjato, Frank Afriyie, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for not acknowledging its failures or apologising to Ghanaians after losing the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, July 21, Afriyie reacted to comments made by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference at the University of Ghana Stadium on Saturday, July 19. He said the conference should have been used to show humility and reconnect with the people.

“The glorious opportunity that the NPP had after their abysmal performance in 2024 was what they had at the conference. I expected them to apologise to Ghanaians and say they are extremely sorry,” Afriyie said.

He criticised the party for failing to take responsibility for what he called “faulty policies that never materialised” and the hardships Ghanaians endured under its leadership. Instead of humility, he said the party was defensive and dismissive.

“But when you come and say that we are not broken, we are fighters and we have never been defeated, it is someway. If you really want to build, build on the notice of trust. Give hope but be realistic,” he added.

Afenyo-Markin had urged party members to remain united and reconnect with the grassroots. The Effutu MP insisted the NPP was still strong despite the election loss and called for discipline and commitment to rebuild the party.

He also criticised the current NDC government, accusing it of failing to honour its promises and worsening the lives of Ghanaians.

Afriyie, however, took issue with the tone of Afenyo-Markin’s remarks, saying: “When you come on such a big platform and tell Ghanaians that when you come, you will do worse, I see that as problematic.”

In response, Newscenta newspaper editor Elvis Darko countered that the NPP had already gone on an apology tour and didn’t need to apologise again at the conference. He argued that losing an election does not mean the party is broken.
