NPP plan to bring it own security to Akwatia by-election – Report

A member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) communications team, Kwabre Nyamesem, has urged all constituencies across the country to make their own security arrangements ahead of the upcoming Akwatia by-election, citing the state’s inability to adequately ensure the safety of party members and voters during political events.

Speaking on Wontumi TV’s morning show, Nyamesem emphasized the need for proactive security planning, warning against repeating mistakes that led to violence and disruption in previous elections.

“Every constituency should make provision for its own security, and let’s all prepare adequately for the Akwatia by-election. We cannot afford to repeat the same old mistakes,” he said.

Nyamesem pointed to recent incidents in constituencies such as Ablekuma North—where violent clashes reportedly disrupted political activities—as clear reminders of the risks involved in relying solely on state security agencies.

“If the state has failed to provide and assure us of security, then we must do so ourselves,” he said.

He commended the efforts of NPP youth who voluntarily took up security responsibilities during the party’s delegates conference, describing them as dedicated individuals protecting the democratic process, not vigilantes.

“I was excited when I saw well-built young men from the NPP volunteering to provide security at the delegates conference. This is not a vigilante group, but volunteers who care about the safety of the party and its members.”

Kwabre Nyamesem further claimed that the violence in Ablekuma North was carried out by individuals allegedly backed by former President John Dramani Mahama.

“What happened in Ablekuma North could happen again if we’re not vigilant. Those vigilante boys who caused mayhem there were sponsored by Mahama,” he claimed.
