Deputy Minister-designate for Communications answer to what is coding causes stir

Deputy Minister-designate for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Mohammed Adams Sukparu, has stirred controversy in the tech community with his unusual definition of coding during his vetting.

His explanation prompted laughter from Weija-Gbawe MP and vetting committee member, Jerry Ahmed, and left many questioning the nominee’s grasp of a key concept in the digital space.

During the session, Ahmed asked Sukparu, “Do you know what coding is?” After the nominee responded affirmatively, Ahmed followed up: “Kindly tell us what coding is.”

Sukparu replied, “Coding is providing training for young men and women in the IT space, training them in web design, training them in how to build software and basically this is what coding is.”

His definition has drawn sharp criticism from members of the tech community and some parliamentarians, who argue that coding is far more detailed and technical than the nominee described.

Renowned computer science expert Dr. Jane Smith offered a more precise explanation, describing coding—or computer programming—as “the process of designing, writing, testing, and maintaining the source code of computer programs.”

She added that it “requires a deep understanding of programming languages, algorithms, and software development principles.”
