Ghana’s former Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has shared one of his most memorable experiences with the late highlife icon Daddy Lumba, who passed away on July 26, 2025.

In an interview with Joy Prime, Mark Okraku Mantey, a respected producer and politician, recalled an event from the early 2000s, shortly after John Agyekum Kufuor had been elected President of Ghana.

At the time, Okraku Mantey was producing for Daasebre Dwamena. He recounted that Daddy Lumba was scheduled to perform at a major event organised by Akosua Puni. The occasion drew several high-profile figures, including the newly elected President Kufuor, former President Jerry John Rawlings, and business mogul Osei Kwame Despite.

When it was Lumba’s turn to perform, the Ankwanoma hitmaker refused to take the stage until his wife arrived, insisting she was his source of inspiration.

According to Okraku Mantey, Lumba made things difficult for the organisers, prompting Despite and Fada Dickson to intervene and arrange for his wife’s swift transportation to the venue.

“When she finally arrived, Lumba directed exactly where she should sit. Someone was already seated there, but he didn’t care — they had to move that person to make space for his wife,” Okraku Mantey recounted.
