Chelsea face another summer headache as young squad faces slew of Olympics callups

The international break is underway, allowing us all to take a longer view of the season for a while.

After this fortnight it’s a pure scramble to the finish, with the Euros coming up at the start of June to follow right away.

But that’s not the only major sporting event we’ve got to think about Chelsea players going to. There’s also the Paris Olympics, which will see July and August filled with yet more football action.

It’s an under 23 tournament, meaning Chelsea’s strategy of buying young might be about to bite them – again.

Host nation France will pick their strongest side possible, and that means poor Malo Gusto is likely to have to follow an exhausting season (and playing at the Euros) with another tournament. Benoit Badiashile, Lesley Ugochukqu and Wesley Fofana are all eligible too. And that’s just for France! Mkhailo Mudryk and Enzo Fernandez are among the others who could be named.

Nizaar Kinsella points out that Chelsea can turn down the call-ups, but that could cause trouble with the players if they’re really keen to play.
