Ablekuma North Rerun: NPP lost twice, and they will lose again – Accra Mayor
The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has openly thrown his support behind Ewurabena Aubynn, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, expressing confidence in her ability to win the rerun election and bring much-needed development to the area.

Speaking in an interview with GHOne News monitored by DailyNewsGhana during the rerun on Friday, July 11, the Mayor criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he described as years of underdevelopment in the constituency, despite the party holding the seat for several terms.
“They [NPP] tried to put intention on the election, but when God says something, nothing can change it. From day one, Ewurabena said she was the Member of Parliament. They said no and went to court. The court ruled that there should be a rerun — so they lost twice, and it means they will lose again,” Mr. Allotey said.
He went on to highlight the poor state of development in the area, pointing out that for a constituency located within the capital city, the lack of progress was unacceptable. “They said this is their strong seat, but there’s no development here. This is no village far away, this is Accra. If they’ve voted for you all the time and they don’t see any development, they are going to change you. This time they’ll try Ewurabena and she’s going to bring development.”
The Electoral Commission (EC) is supervising the rerun in 19 polling stations within Ablekuma North. These stations had unresolved verification issues stemming from the December 2024 general elections. The EC had earlier certified the results from 18 out of 37 disputed polling stations, but due to the irregularities in the remaining 19, fresh voting was deemed necessary.
The NPP had earlier rejected the rerun, accusing the EC of favouring the NDC and insisting that their candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, had already won the election. The party initially declared a boycott of the rerun. However, Nana Akua Afriyie eventually decided to contest, despite her party’s stance, following the Accra High Court’s dismissal of her injunction application seeking to stop the process.
The EC has reiterated its independence and stressed that the rerun is critical to resolving the prolonged electoral impasse and restoring parliamentary representation to the constituency.
Security for the exercise has been managed by the Ghana Police Service, working closely with the EC to ensure that the voting process is peaceful, transparent, and free of any disturbances.
