President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has approved the elevation of several administrative areas across Ghana, upgrading some districts to municipalities and municipalities to metropolises.
The Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development (MLGRD) announced the decision in a statement issued on Wednesday, December 4, 2024. The upgrades were based on a request from the Ministry in line with the provisions of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).
Municipalities Upgraded to Metropolises:
- Ho Municipal Assembly
- Sunyani Municipal Assembly
- New Juaben Municipal Assembly
- Wa Municipal Assembly
Districts Upgraded to Municipalities:
- Offinso North District Assembly
- Brim North District Assembly
- Karaga District Assembly
These changes aim to enhance the administrative capacity and governance structure of the affected areas, enabling them to better serve their growing populations and meet development needs.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to improving decentralization and local governance to support the socio-economic development of all regions in Ghana.
