Akwatia by-election: Constituents go to the polls to choose new MP today

Voters in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region are heading to the polls today, Tuesday, September 2, to elect a new Member of Parliament following the death of the incumbent, Ernest Kumi.

More than 50,000 registered voters are expected to take part in the by-election, which has become a fiercely contested race between Ghana’s two major political parties.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is represented by Bernard Bediako Baidoo, while the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has fielded Solomon Kwame Asumadu.

Both candidates have run vigorous campaigns in recent weeks, with senior party leaders and national executives making high-profile visits to rally support in the constituency.

To ensure a smooth process, the Ghana Police Service has deployed over 5,500 officers across Akwatia. The officers are tasked with maintaining peace and order before, during, and after voting.

The police have cautioned against violence, voter intimidation, or any breach of electoral regulations, warning that offenders will face firm action.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has also assured the public of a transparent and credible election. It noted that special arrangements have been made for the timely delivery of electoral materials, close monitoring, and efficient collation of results.
