Akwatia by-election: Early morning chaos threatens peaceful process
Tensions flared in the early hours of Monday, September 2, during the Akwatia by-election as supporters of the two main political parties clashed.

JoyNews cameras captured the heated exchanges between sympathisers of the governing NDC and the opposition NPP after some supporters reportedly crossed into a restricted area.
JoyNews’ Blessed Sogah reported that the confrontation quickly escalated, prompting swift intervention by police personnel to restore order.
In the aftermath of the scuffle, opposition figures including Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin were escorted to their vehicles under police protection. Supporters from both sides were also seen trading insults and harsh words.
The by-election, triggered by the passing of incumbent MP Ernest Kumi, has attracted more than 50,000 registered voters. The contest is between NDC candidate Bernard Bediako Baidoo and NPP’s Solomon Kwame Asumadu.
Both parties have mounted vigorous campaigns, backed by senior party executives and national leaders who have descended on the constituency in recent weeks to whip up support.
To ensure peace, the Ghana Police Service has deployed over 5,500 officers across Akwatia, while the Electoral Commission has assured voters of a credible, free, and transparent process.
