Akwatia By-Election: We will arm ourselves and get ready – NPP
Dennis Amfo Sefa, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate for Tema West in the 2024 general election, has sparked concern after calling for armed readiness ahead of the anticipated by-election in Akwatia. His remarks came in the wake of violent incidents that disrupted the parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North.

Speaking to Channel One News on Friday, July 11, during the rerun, Amfo Sefa condemned the violence and accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of deliberately instigating unrest to influence electoral outcomes.
“This is a sad and dangerous precedent that is being set by the NDC. Over the years, whenever there is a by-election, we in the NPP conduct ourselves democratically,” he said.
When asked about the 2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence — often cited by critics of the NPP — Amfo Sefa’s frustration was evident.
“Is that to say we should continue? If that is what you are saying, then it means we should prepare for Akwatia. We have to arm ourselves and get ready. And we will repeat it there,” he said.
The comments have drawn sharp criticism from political analysts and civil society actors, who say the call to arms could escalate tensions and incite further violence in Ghana’s electoral process.
The Ablekuma North rerun, particularly at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station, was marred by chaos after armed men stormed the area, halting voting and assaulting NPP figures including Nana Akua Afriyie and former Minister Hawa Koomson.
Observers have raised concerns over the rising tide of political violence in Ghana. According to recent police data, incidents of politically motivated attacks have increased by 30% compared to previous election cycles.
Amfo Sefa’s remarks underscore growing fears over electoral security, with calls mounting for authorities to take decisive steps to safeguard future polls and ensure peaceful democratic participation.
