Akwatia By-election: What MP-elect Bernard Baidoo said after the victory

Bernard Bediako Baidoo emerged victorious in the fiercely contested Akwatia by-election, declaring that Tuesday’s win was about far more than politics.

For the newly elected MP, the outcome represents the rebirth of a town deeply tied to mining and marked by years of economic struggles.

“The people listened to the message we gave them, and we saw that they had really imbibed it. They gave us hope — a kind of hope — which has resulted in what we see today,” Mr. Baidoo said after the Electoral Commission declared him the winner.

He stressed that the victory did not come as a surprise to him or his campaign team.
“We’ve always been very confident. We’ve been in this game for a while. If you are in it and you are losing, you will know, except maybe if you don’t want to be honest with yourself,” he explained.

The lawyer-turned-politician brushed aside controversies and distractions surrounding his candidacy, saying he remained focused on the campaign’s core message.

“When you are going into such a contest, there are a lot of things you will hear, but I don’t focus on those tangential issues. My focus is to deliver my message, have the people accept it, and work together to secure victory,” he stated.

Turning his attention to Akwatia’s future, Mr. Baidoo emphasized the importance of reviving the area’s mining industry through lawful practices.
“Akwatia’s name has always been tied to mining. You can’t take that away. We only have to do it lawfully, and that’s what we’re going to work on,” he promised.

He recalled the difficult times before 2024 when even the Ghana Consolidated Diamonds (GCD) property was without electricity.
“Where we are now is GCD property. Just before John Mahama came to power, this place was in darkness. We had to rely on solar panels during the 2024 collation. Today, we have electricity — not because of the by-election, but because plans were already underway to restore light here,” he explained.

Mr. Baidoo said this development marks only the beginning of Akwatia’s transformation, pledging to create jobs and bring large-scale employment back to the area.

“This is the first step toward getting GCD back on track, which has the potential to employ thousands of people. There are other things we are looking at to boost the local economy,” he revealed.

For him, the victory is not merely about securing a parliamentary seat but about reigniting hope and ushering in a new era of growth and prosperity for Akwatia…CONTINUE MORE READING>>>
