Annoh-Dompreh Calls for Halt to Transition Pending Parliamentary Results
Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyiri, has urged outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to pause the ongoing transition process until the Electoral Commission (EC) fully declares all outstanding parliamentary results.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, December 11, Annoh-Dompreh highlighted concerns about unresolved parliamentary contests, including his own constituency, as grounds to delay the transition.
Key Appeal to President and President-elect
Addressing the issue, Annoh-Dompreh remarked:
“Let me appeal to the outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo… The transition process should be halted. His Excellency must come to equity with clean hands, ensuring all the remaining seats are declared by the EC before the transition continues. I also call on President-elect John Dramani Mahama to demonstrate fairness and address his people accordingly.”
Response to Accusations of Violence
Annoh-Dompreh also refuted allegations made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Eastern Regional Chairman, accusing him of involvement in a shooting incident during the collation process in Nsawam Adoagyiri. The chairman claimed that Annoh-Dompreh shot an election observer, Richard Taboh, in the midst of chaos at the collation center.
The MP categorically denied the accusations, stating, “I have no involvement in the alleged shooting. Such claims are completely false.”
He further called on the Ghana Police Service to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident to clear his name and ensure accountability.
Concerns Over Electoral Process
Annoh-Dompreh criticized what he described as “irresponsible behavior” by the NDC, calling for the EC to establish a secure and transparent platform to finalize the announcement of parliamentary results.
His remarks add to ongoing tensions surrounding the aftermath of the 2024 general elections, which saw several parliamentary contests marred by disputes and delays in result declarations.
Implications for the Transition Process
The appeal to halt the transition highlights the broader challenges of balancing democratic protocol with electoral resolution. With President-elect Mahama and outgoing President Akufo-Addo both emphasizing cooperation during the transition, such calls could test the commitment to maintaining peace and stability during this critical period.
