Bagbin condemns vetting chaos, says members lacked emotional intelligence

Speaker of Parliament Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has strongly criticized the altercation that erupted between New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) members during the vetting process at the Appointments Committee on Thursday, January 30, 2025.
Addressing the House the following day, Bagbin described the incident as “disgraceful and deeply regrettable,” emphasizing that it undermines the integrity of Parliament.
“Parliamentary privilege does not and will never extend to lawlessness,” he declared, condemning the lack of decorum displayed by members during the heated session.
The Speaker expressed concern over the timing and setting of the chaos, stating:
“It is deeply troubling that this is the time that such an incident is happening within the precincts of Parliament.”
Bagbin warned that Parliament’s credibility is at stake, cautioning lawmakers against behavior that damages public trust.
“This House must acknowledge that it is rapidly eroding public confidence,” he stressed.
In response to the fracas, the Speaker announced the formation of a 7-member special committee tasked with conducting a full-scale investigation into the events. He assured the House that any member found guilty of misconduct would face disciplinary action.
“Any member found culpable shall face appropriate disciplinary actions,” Bagbin stated.
He also made it clear that the Chairman of the Appointments Committee must still carry out his responsibilities, despite the ongoing inquiry.
“This does not absolve the Chairman of the Appointments Committee from performing his duties,” he noted.
Bagbin further lamented the failure of lawmakers to exercise restraint and professionalism.
“Members could not exercise a scintilla of emotional intelligence,” he observed.
The Speaker’s strong stance signals a commitment to restoring discipline and decorum in Parliament, as public scrutiny over the conduct of elected officials continues to grow.
