Bawku’s Instability Raises Alarms for December Polls—Braimah
The Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah, has expressed concerns about the upcoming elections, citing growing anxiety among the populace.
Speaking on Joy News’ Newsfile program, Braimah lauded the efforts of political parties in signing a peace pact to promote a non-violent electoral process.
However, he highlighted the worrying state of affairs in Ghana, pointing to numerous incidents across the country that he believes are either politically motivated or have significant electoral implications.
Braimah referenced the unresolved killing of eight individuals in Techiman during the last election, lamenting the lack of justice.
“Certainly, we all know that the developments in Bawku have electoral implications. Things are happening partly because of the upcoming elections, and politicians are behind it,” he remarked.
He further noted the challenges in Bawku, where escalating violence has raised doubts about the ability to conduct elections in the area.
“The Electoral Commission (EC) recently assured the public that elections would take place in Bawku despite the challenges. But if elections are not held due to gun battles and other security issues, can we still consider the process peaceful? I doubt it,” he stated.
Braimah also warned that the election results could either ease tensions or exacerbate them in other parts of the country.
He emphasized the high stakes for voters in these conflict-prone areas, who are determined to see their preferred candidates emerge victorious.
“So, I tend to agree with the assessment that many people are anxious and fearful. If care is not taken, this year’s elections might end up being more violent than previous ones,” he cautioned.
