Bawumia given 75% landslide win as NPP flagbearer

The campaign team of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed strong optimism about securing a decisive win in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer election set for January 31, 2026.

According to Awal Mohammed, Communications Aide to Team Bawumia, the former Vice President is expected to secure “not less than 75 per cent” of the votes.

Speaking on The Verdict with Isaac Addae on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, Mohammed described Dr Bawumia as the most formidable and best-prepared candidate for the 2028 general election, highlighting his popularity, experience, and integrity.

“Team Bawumia are focused on an issue-based campaign, and we believe he is the most marketed and most formidable candidate going into the 2028 elections,” he said.

He added, “Dr Bawumia is the most popular candidate in the country; he is the most prepared. In terms of governance, he has the experience and is ready to ascend the high office as President of Ghana.”

Responding to claims by rival contender Dr Bryan Acheampong that he significantly financed the party ahead of the 2024 elections, Mohammed dismissed the assertion.

“Dr Bryan Acheampong lost the Suhum seat in 2012 due to financial constraints, hence he should not claim he financed the party prior to the 2024 election,” he said.

On reports of tension surrounding endorsements, Mohammed stressed that Team Bawumia respects the constitutional rights of party members, including MPs who support other candidates.

“No single person in Bawumia’s camp has issues with anyone who has endorsed any of the flagbearer hopefuls,” he noted.

“Team Bawumia have never issued a statement on the two MPs who endorsed Bryan Acheampong; it is within their constitutional right.”

He further accused Acheampong of showing intolerance by criticising MPs who had publicly endorsed Dr Bawumia.

“Bryan Acheampong berated the 15 MPs in the Eastern Region who have endorsed Dr Bawumia,” Mohammed said.

Defending the former Vice President’s integrity, he insisted that Dr Bawumia has never been linked to corruption.

“Dr Bawumia is not corrupt, and there is no single scandal against him,” he stressed.

On concerns about his role in economic management, Mohammed argued that the Constitution does not automatically make the Vice President head of the Economic Management Team.

“The office of the Vice President is limited in Ghana,” he explained, citing the example of former President John Kufuor’s administration, where then-Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama was not head of the Economic Management Team.
