Bring back Best Performing Group category – Lali x Lola to TGMA

Ghanaian music duo Lali x Lola, has appealed to organisers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards to reinstate Group of the Year category into this year’s award scheme.
In a statement released on February 3, 2025, the duo expressed their displeasure about the absence of the Best Group category from the award scheme.
They made a strong case as to why the category has to return, highlighting the contributions of music groups to Ghana’s music scene.
“Over the past few years, there has been a significant resurgence of talented and impactful music groups in Ghana. These groups are making tremendous contributions to the growth of the industry, with chart-topping hits, compelling live performances, and a renewed sense of collaboration. Notable groups such as Dope Nation, Keche, Team Eternity, Bhad Mayors, and ourselves—La x Lola— are just a few examples of the vibrant collective energy driving the industry forward,” the statement said.
According to the duo who are also twins, they believe that “reinstating the Best Performing Group category would serve as a powerful recognition of this creative momentum and further encourage unity, collaboration, and innovation among artistes.”
They, therefore, urge the Telecel Ghana Music Awards Board to consider bringing back this category for the 2025 edition and beyond.
In 2022, Telecel Ghana Music Awards collapsed the Group of the Year from the list of categories.
The Head of Public Events and Communications for Charterhouse and a member of the board of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards scheme, Robert Klah, explained that the group of the year category was scrapped due to lack of competitiveness.
“Group of the Year for this particular year, we’ve seen it to be not competitive. We do not have enough groups this year.
“So for this particular year we are resting it and in subsequent years if we have enough coming we will bring it back,” he said in an interview on Hitz FM.
Aside, Lali x Lola, many other industry stakeholders have called for the reinstatement of the Best Performing Group category, particularly at a time when there are impressive performances from groups such as DopeNation, Team Eternity Ghana and others.
