Chairman Wontumi withdraws bail review motion

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, has officially withdrawn the motion he filed in court to challenge the bail conditions set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Chairman Wontumi went to court on 30th May 2025, asking the High Court in Accra to review the GHC50 million bail EOCO had given him. The case was expected to be heard on Tuesday, 3rd June 2025.

But on Monday, 2nd June, his lawyers filed a notice to discontinue the case. This means Wontumi no longer wants to go ahead with the legal challenge.

The reason for this move is simple: Wontumi has now fulfilled the bail conditions. He was able to provide two justified sureties, as required. His lead lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed that all documents for the sureties had been completed.

Appiah-Kubi also mentioned that former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, helped make it possible for Wontumi to meet the bail conditions.

Earlier, Wontumi’s lawyers had argued that the GHC50 million bail was too high and looked like it was meant to frustrate his release. They even filed an affidavit listing reasons why the bail should be reduced.

But now that the conditions have been met, the legal challenge is no longer necessary. Wontumi is now expected to return to public and political life while EOCO continues its investigation.

The case is connected to an ongoing probe by EOCO into possible financial and economic crimes. However, details of the allegations have not been made public yet.
