Community leader chops off hand of boy for stealing his catfish

NIGERIA – A 61-year-old man, community leader identified as Jeremiah Obifor, has been arrested for chopping off the hand of an 11-year-old boy, Goodluck Amechi, with a machete in the Okokomaiko area of Lagos.

The horrifying incident happened on Friday, June 7, at about 8:20 a.m. Obifor reportedly attacked the child after accusing him of attempting to steal catfish from his pond.

According to Lagos State Police PRO, Bala Elkana:

“Doris reported at Okokomaiko Police Station that on the same date at about 8:20 a.m., her foster son, Goodluck Amechi, aged 11, was attacked with a machete by Jeremiah Obifor of No. 14 Isha Ibrahim Street, Mechanic bus stop, Mebamu, Okokomaiko, and his right hand was cut off.

“The victim was rushed to Igando General Hospital. The suspect alleged that he saw the victim around his fish pond and thought he came to steal his fish, which was why he attacked him.”
