Dr Bawumia storms Ablekuma North for Akua Afriyie

Former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, has thrown his weight behind Nana Akua Afriyie, the party’s parliamentary candidate for the Ablekuma North Constituency, as she campaigns ahead of Friday’s parliamentary rerun.

Dr. Bawumia joined her on the campaign trail, signaling strong personal support despite the party’s official position of non-participation in the rerun. Before hitting the ground with her, he reportedly donated GHS 410,000 to back her campaign efforts. The donation was made at his North Ridge office.

The rerun will take place in 19 polling stations within the constituency, following the dismissal of a court application seeking to stop the election. On July 9, the Accra High Court rejected a motion for an interim injunction filed by Nana Akua Afriyie, describing it as “unmeritorious.”

Presiding judge Justice Ali Baba Abature ruled that halting the rerun would interfere with the Electoral Commission’s constitutional duty to ensure full representation for the people of Ablekuma North.

Nana Akua Afriyie’s decision to continue her campaign appears to go against the NPP’s earlier stance of not contesting the rerun. However, with Dr. Bawumia’s visible support, her solo efforts seem to have gained significant momentum.
