EC finally set date for Ayawaso East by-election following death of MP

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that a parliamentary by election will be held in the Ayawaso East Constituency on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a statement issued on Friday, January 16, 2026, the Commission said the seat had become vacant after the MP’s death, making a by election constitutionally required.

“Following the unfortunate death of the Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso East Constituency; Hon. Mahama Naser Toure, the seat of the Constituency in Parliament has become vacant,” the EC stated.

The Commission explained that the election is being organised in accordance with Article 112(5) of the Constitution and announced that it will “hold a By-Election in the Constituency on Tuesday, 3rd March, 2026.”

The EC also announced that the filing fee for the by election has been set at GH¢10,000. Female candidates and persons with disabilities will pay a reduced fee of GH¢7,500.

“We urge the public to be guided accordingly,” the statement, signed by the Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, said.

Mahama Naser Toure passed away at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after a short illness.

He was serving his fourth term in Parliament and held several leadership positions, including Vice Chairman of the Energy Committee. He was also a member of the Roads and Transport Committee, the House Committee, and the Private Members’ Bills and Motions Committee…CONTINUE MORE READING>>>
