Get ready to learn about animals that can produce or detect electricity.

Echidnas
These egg-laying mammals have electro-receptors on their snouts that help them find food. They can sense electrical signals released by prey such as worms and insects hidden underground.
Platypus
The platypus is known for its unusual features, including a bill, venomous spines, and egg-laying. It can also sense electricity. Electro-receptors on its nose allow it to detect electric signals from prey, which helps it hunt in murky or deep water where vision is limited.
Stargazers
Stargazers are spiny fish with strong eyes. Their eye muscles can release an electric current that shocks and stuns prey. This electric ability also helps protect them from predators.
Bees
Bees are attracted to flowers not only by colour and scent but also by electric fields. Flowers change their electric charge after being visited, and bees can detect this change to know whether a flower still has nectar.
Electric rays
Electric rays have kidney-shaped organs that generate electric shocks. They use mild shocks to warn predators and stronger shocks to disable prey.
Geckos
Geckos can climb smooth surfaces partly because of electrostatic forces in their toe pads. The difference in electric charge between their feet and the surface helps them stick firmly as they climb.
Elephant nose fish
Despite the name, this fish does not have a trunk. Instead, it uses its long chin to detect the electrical signals of its prey. Its electroreception ability allows it to find food even in complete darkness.
Oriental hornets
The Oriental hornet gets its electric ability from sunlight. It has special brown tissues that generate electricity and yellow tissues that absorb sunlight. This insect can convert sunlight into energy and use the electricity as a power source.
Scientists discovered this ability after observing the hornet’s unusual habit of being most active during strong sunlight…CONTINUE MORE READING>>>
