Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday, June 12, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, Mr. John Kapi, revealed that those arrested include one exam supervisor, six invigilators, a school administrator, and two civilians — a fashion designer and a student nurse.

According to Mr. Kapi, the suspects were caught with mobile phones and had taken pictures of exam papers, which they shared on social media. “These persons were not supposed to have access to the exams, and it is a crime for anyone to possess the papers outside the exam hall,” he said.

WAEC also found that some of the suspects had solved questions and photocopied materials they planned to distribute to candidates. The arrests happened in five regions: one person was arrested in Greater Accra, one in Ashanti, five in Bono East, and two in the Bono Region.

In a related case, some students were caught with photocopied materials. Mr. Kapi stated that WAEC has collected statements from these students and is still investigating. He warned that if it is confirmed that the students used the leaked materials, their papers will be cancelled.

WAEC assured the public that it is working closely with security agencies to maintain the integrity of the exams. This year, over 600,000 candidates are writing the BECE across the country.
