EXPLAINER: Why salaries of 2,563 government workers suspended
The Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) has announced that it has suspended the salaries of some government workers after a nationwide headcount exercise.

In a statement signed by Cephas Neosoo, Head of Public Relations at the CAGD, on Friday, January 30, 2026, the department said salaries for January 2026 have been paid to most workers on the government payroll.
However, the salaries of 2,563 employees were withheld following a recommendation from the Auditor General. According to the statement, the affected workers did not take part in the 2025 nationwide headcount carried out across various Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
The CAGD has asked those affected to contact the Ghana Audit Service to confirm their employment status and complete the required clearance process. This is necessary for their salaries to be restored.
