Family disowns Bryan Acheampong for Bawumia

The Dombo family has distanced itself from a banner headline published by The Chronicle newspaper on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, which claimed the family was backing New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful and Abetifi MP, Dr Bryan Acheampong, ahead of the party’s presidential primaries.

In a statement signed by Tracy Rabiatu Dombo and Alexandra Dombo Tenadu, the family described the headline, “DOMBO FAMILY BACKS BRYAN,” as misleading and not in line with its publicly stated position.

“The Dombo family has taken note of a banner headline published by The Chronicle Newspaper on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, which read, ‘DOMBO FAMILY BACKS BRYAN.’ We consider it necessary and responsible to set the record straight and correct the misleading impression created by that publication,” the statement said.

The family categorically denied endorsing Dr Bryan Acheampong ahead of the NPP flagbearership contest scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.

“At no time has the Dombo family endorsed or supported Dr Bryan Acheampong in relation to the party’s flagbearership contest,” the statement stressed, adding that the headline was inaccurate and did not reflect the family’s convictions, values or publicly stated position.

Clear stance

According to the statement, the family’s position has always been clear, consistent and based on principle, guided by leadership qualities such as vision, character and conviction.

The family said it has openly expressed support for former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, whom it described as a leader with merit, intellectual depth and a strong commitment to Ghana’s long-term development.

“We have openly and deliberately expressed support for H.E. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, based on merit, intellectual depth, resilience, and a demonstrated commitment to the long-term development of Ghana,” the statement said.

The family warned against any attempt to twist its position to suggest support for another candidate, describing such claims as a distortion of facts.

Legacy and values

Touching on its place in Ghana’s political history, the Dombo family said its values of integrity, inclusion, service and sacrifice are non-negotiable.

“Our name and legacy are not tools for speculation, nor instruments for political convenience,” the statement noted.

Explaining why it supports Dr Bawumia, the family said the decision is neither personal nor transactional.

“Our support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has never been driven by personal relationships, material inducements or sectional considerations,” the family said, describing the support as a deliberate and reasoned choice based on substance rather than noise.

The family praised Dr Bawumia’s clarity of thought, policy depth and his role in national conversations on economic management, digitalisation and public sector reforms. It also highlighted his calm nature and respect for democratic institutions.

According to the family, Dr Bawumia represents the inclusive spirit on which the NPP was founded and promotes national unity rather than division.

Call for correction

The Dombo family warned that the headline could mislead the public and party members, stressing the need for responsible journalism.

“Responsible journalism demands accuracy, context and verification, especially when long-standing family names and political legacies are involved,” the statement said, adding that those standards were not met in this case.

The family therefore called on The Chronicle newspaper to correct the misrepresentation and be more cautious in its reporting.

“Ghana’s democratic discourse must be anchored in truth, fairness and respect for facts rather than assumptions,” the statement concluded, reaffirming the family’s commitment to principled national dialogue…CONTINUE MORE READING>>>
