Ghana Freedom Party Endorses NDC Ahead of Election 2024
The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has officially declared its support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2024 general election.
This announcement comes after the disqualification of the GFP’s presidential candidate, Philip Appiah Kubi, also known as Roman Fada, by the Electoral Commission (EC) on November 12, 2024. Kubi’s candidacy was nullified due to irregularities on his nomination forms, following the sudden demise of the GFP’s original flagbearer, Akua Donkor.
At a media briefing on Wednesday, December 4, GFP Deputy General Secretary Jerry Addo disclosed that the party’s decision to endorse the NDC was made after extensive consultations with its executives.
Addo highlighted key policies of the NDC, such as the establishment of a Women’s Development Bank and the abolition of academic fees for first-year tertiary students, as pivotal in influencing the GFP’s choice.
“The Ghana Freedom Party is supporting the candidature of H.E. John Dramani Mahama on Saturday [December 7]. He’s going to capture power to save Ghanaians. And I want to state here and it’s a fact, nobody has coerced us, nobody has influenced us into arriving at this decision,” Addo stated.
He elaborated on the alignment between the GFP’s vision and the NDC’s policies, noting that the late Akua Donkor was particularly passionate about initiatives that supported women and education.
“We critically examined the manifestoes and policies of the various political parties and even the independent candidates. That is why we had to arrive at this decision very late. It was not easy; we did extensive consultations,” Addo explained.
He further emphasized the relevance of the NDC’s Women’s Development Bank initiative and their commitment to free tertiary education for first-year students and persons with disabilities, aligning these with the late Akua Donkor’s ideals.
“The policies and vision of the NDC are in line with the Ghana Freedom Party,” he concluded.
With this endorsement, the GFP joins the NDC’s campaign efforts in the final days leading up to the December 7 polls.
